"How long should I prepare?" is one of the most common questions before the DLR aptitude test — and the honest answer is that the number of weeks matters less than the structure behind them. Someone who spends eight weeks practising modules at random often ends up less prepared than someone who trains for three weeks with a clear plan.

This plan gives you exactly that structure for eight weeks: which modules to focus on and when, how many minutes per day is realistic, and when to schedule a full exam simulation. It's deliberately built so you can compress it if your test date is closer than eight weeks away.

The core idea: short daily sessions of 20 to 45 minutes rather than rare marathon sessions. Your brain learns reaction patterns and task mechanics through repetition, and repetition works best in small, regular doses.

Core principles behind the plan

Before getting into the details, three principles carry the whole plan:

  • Consistency beats duration. 25 minutes on six days out of seven beats three hours crammed into a single weekend.
  • Breadth before depth — at least early on. All ten modules should get touched at least once early, so you know where your own weak spots are instead of discovering that in week 6.
  • Traffic-light targets as a compass, not a verdict. The green/yellow/red targets per module show you where there's still room to grow — they're a steering tool for your training, not a judgment of your suitability.

Weeks 1–2: Learn the basic mechanics

The first two weeks aren't about personal bests — they're about actually understanding each module once, calmly. Start with the permanently free modules SKT, VMC, PPT and TVT, which give you a first impression without having to juggle every module's trial access at once.

From week 2, it's worth deliberately scheduling the time-limited trial access for the remaining modules (KRN, RMS, ENS and whichever you haven't tried yet), rather than starting them all in parallel and letting the trial days run out unused. Give each new module one or two sessions to internalise the rules before chasing speed — with the SKT triangle test especially, accuracy matters more than speed at the start.

Daily time: 20 to 30 minutes is plenty at this stage, split across one or two modules per session.

Weeks 3–4: Get all 10 modules active

By week 3, all ten modules should have been practised at least once, including OWT, WFG and PHY. This is where a real picture starts to form: which traffic lights are already green for you, and which are yellow or red? Write down this snapshot — it's your starting point for the focused phase that follows.

The end of week 4 is a good moment for your first exam simulation in the "Compact" variant (around 30 minutes, roughly half the real item counts). This first simulation is less about a personal best and more about getting used to the format: all modules back-to-back, no intro, no in-between feedback, at test level — it feels different from isolated single-module practice, and it shouldn't come as a surprise on the actual test day.

Daily time: 25 to 35 minutes, deliberately rotating between modules rather than fixating on one.

Weeks 5–6: Target your weak spots

This is where the traffic-light snapshot from weeks 3–4 pays off. Instead of treating all modules equally, shift your focus to the two or three modules with the weakest results — often RMS, KRN or OWT, since they feel less familiar than pure multiple-choice knowledge.

Use the error analysis after each session: it gives you concrete pointers, for example whether your SKT reaction time is too slow or you're misapplying a specific rule more often, or which instrument type trips you up in OWT. These pointers are worth more than generic "practise more" advice — they tell you what to change.

Don't drop your stronger modules entirely during this phase — keep refreshing them at a reduced frequency so they don't get rusty. The end of week 6 is a good time for a second Compact simulation, to make your progress since week 4 visible — a direct comparison to your last run shows whether the targeted work on your weak spots is actually paying off.

Along the way, treat the traffic lights as a steering tool, not a final verdict. A single red result after one session doesn't say much on its own — it's the trend across several sessions that shows whether a module is stabilising. If a module stays red across two sessions in a row, it's usually better to drop a level and rebuild the fundamentals rather than push on at too high a difficulty; if it stays consistently green, that's your cue to move up a level.

Daily time: 30 to 40 minutes, with a clear focus on the weaker modules.

Week 7: The dress rehearsal

Week 7 is dress-rehearsal week: a Complete simulation with the real item counts (around 60 minutes), in the actual module order ENS → TVT → PHY → KRN → RMS → OWT → VMC → SKT → WFG → PPT, back-to-back with no breaks. Set aside a quiet block of time where you genuinely won't be interrupted — as close as possible to the conditions of the real test day.

Review the report carefully afterwards: total time, the traffic light per module, and above all the weakest modules from this specific run. This isn't an invitation to try entirely new strategies at this point — it's your last real opportunity to close small gaps before the taper begins.

Daily time: 35 to 45 minutes, including the one long simulation session.

Week 8: Taper instead of learning new things

In the final week before the test, a principle borrowed from sports training applies just as well here: tapering — deliberately reducing training load instead of trying to learn new things right up to the last minute. Attempting to master a completely new level right before the test tends to create doubt rather than improvement.

In practice, that means:

  • Cut daily practice time down to 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Focus on light refreshers across all modules rather than intensive new learning.
  • Build in more rest days than in previous weeks — your mind benefits from recovery just as much as from practice.
  • Avoid squeezing in another full exam simulation in the last two or three days; a short, calm session per module is enough.

As a general rule across the whole plan: a training plan with no rest days isn't a good training plan. Build in one or two training-free days per week throughout the eight weeks — not because you're short on time otherwise, but because your brain needs downtime to actually consolidate the patterns you've been practising. In week 8 that matters even more: more rest days than during the more intense weeks 5 through 7 are explicitly the point.
